Photofacials Q & A

What Is a Photofacial?

A photofacial is an effective cosmetic procedure for patients looking for a non-surgical, skin tightening and lightening treatment of the face and neck. Concentrated pulses of light are used during treatment, which causes a chemical change in the skin cells stimulating healing and collagen production. This treatment can also be used to clear acne and redness or other discoloration. Intense pulse light and BroadBand Light treatments are very safe and non-invasive. Treatments can be scheduled to work around a job and social obligations since there is little to no recovery time required.

Does Glendale Dermatology Use a Specific Brand of Photofacial?

Patients at Glendale Dermatology benefit from an investment in Sciton BBL, a state-of-the-art photofacial system which provides excellent results on pigment, redness, rejuvenation, skin tightening, reversal of collagen. In a recent 2012 study out of Stanford University, it was shown that the Sciton BBL activates youthful genes making this treatment ideal to stop aging in its tracks. This BBL uses a wide range of light wavelengths which allow for target treatment for a variety of skin conditions. The Sciton machine includes a handheld device which makes it easier for the providers to treat all areas of skin needing attention. It also includes a thermoelectric monitoring system which helps to maintain a stable temperature and protect the patient’s skin.

What Can I Expect From a Photofacial?

Photofacials offer a noninvasive cosmetic treatment which results in smooth, even toned, and youthful looking skin without the risks of other cosmetic surgical procedures such as facelifts or eyelid lifts. During treatment, the patient will wear protective eyewear while a licensed professional uses the Sciton BBL wand to direct light energy into the skin that needs treatment. The treatments are quick and can typically be performed in a lunch hour with little to no time needed for recovery. Results are usually noticeable after just one treatment, although the full extent requires a series of treatments. For optimal results, it is recommended that patients have 3-5 treatments over the course of a year.
