Rosacea Q & A

Glendale Dermatology

What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin disorder characterized by reddened skin, typically affecting the face. The most common early symptoms of rosacea is a tendency to blush easily, which over time can develop into more pronounced blushing appearance or spread to other parts of the body such as the ears, chest, and back. Other early or primary symptoms of rosacea include flushing, persistent redness, bumps and pimples, visible blood vessels. Often patients with rosacea experience eye irritation, a burning sensation in the skin, a rough and dry appearance of the skin, raised red patches of skin called plaques, a thickening of the skin, and swelling.

How Is Rosacea Treated?

There is no cure for rosacea, however, it can be treated and managed to minimize the disruption it can cause to a patient’s life. The providers at Glendale Dermatology are dedicated to working closely with their patients to create customized treatment plans, tailored to manage the specific symptoms experienced by each individual patient. There are a number of treatments available to patients suffering from rosacea. Following a consultation, the provider may, for example, prescribe topical and oral medications to treat any bumps or pimples associated with the condition. Other medications are sometimes prescribed to reduce any associated swelling. In many cases, the dermatologist includes additional topical treatment in addition to any oral medications to maintain the remission of symptoms. In some cases, the dermatologist may treat the skin with lasers or intense pulsed light sources (IPL) to reduce the appearance of blood vessels or to smooth the texture of the skin. The provider will also review the patient’s skin care regime to make sure that the products or techniques are not causing further irritation.

What Are Common Triggers of Rosacea?

Many different factors are known to cause a rosacea outbreak. Some of these triggers include:

  • Exposure to the sun
  • Emotional stress
  • Extreme temperatures, hot or cold
  • Wind
  • Heavy exercise
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Hot baths or showers
  • Spicy foods
  • Certain skin care products or cosmetics
