Skin Cancer Screening Q & A

Who Should Have Skin Cancer Screening?

Considering that approximately 20% of Americans will develop skin cancer at some point during their lifetime, everyone should be checking their own skin regularly. If a person is high-risk, he or she should also have routine professional screenings. The providers at Glendale Dermatology provide screenings for patients of all ages, including photography of moles, if needed, to create a record to monitor changes. Most screenings take approximately 10 minutes and does not replace an annual checkup or wellness exam with a primary care practitioner. The screening will either cover the whole body, taking place in a private room or it will check body parts such as the face, neck, arms and hands which are regularly exposed to the sun in a semi-private setting.

What Happens If the Provider Finds Something Suspicious?

If the provider finds growth could be cancerous during the screening, he/she will order a biopsy to gather more information. A biopsy is the removal of a small piece of the suspect tissue which is sent for testing to determine if the growth is benign or malignant. The provider may use the shave biopsy technique where a scalpel is used to shave off the growth. The provider may also use the punch biopsy technique, where a small tool, resembling a cookie cutter is placed over the growth, pushed down and rotated to remove a small circular piece of the skin. Another method is excision, where the entire growth is removed with a scalpel.

How Long Will It Take For the Results to Be Returned?

The sample will be assessed to determine if the cells are benign, or harmless, and to identify the issue. In most cases, biopsy results are returned within three to 10 days. Abnormal results do not necessarily mean the growth is cancerous. There are a number of skin disorders that could result in abnormal results.
