Warts Q & A

What Are Warts?

Warts are skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are usually skin colored and rough feeling, but can also be a dark brown or grayish black, flat, and smooth. Warts are contagious and spread through direct and indirect contact. Warts should be treated to avoid spread to oneself and others.

How Are Warts Treated?

The providers at Glendale Dermatology use a variety of treatments to remove warts including immunotherapy, laser therapy, and blister beetle extract. Since warts are caused by a virus, immunotherapy is helpful because it stimulates the body’s natural immune response to the virus. One form of immune therapy is the application of a chemical that causes an allergic reaction around the wart which removes the wart as the body fights off the allergen. Laser treatments are also effective on stubborn warts where light energy penetrates the growth and kills of the virus. Blister beetle extract, also known as cantharidin, is a substance that is painted on the wart, causing a blister to grow beneath it, killing the wart. The dermatologist is then able to safely remove the growth. Other treatments for warts include cryotherapy which freezes of the growth with liquid nitrogen and electrosurgery and curettage, which burns away the wart.

Is There a Way to Get Rid of the Virus?

Unfortunately, there is no way to remove the human papillomavirus from the body permanently. Warts can appear at any time. You can keep your immune system strong by following a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, exercise, good sleep, and stress management activities. When warts do appear, your best option is to seek professional treatment as soon as possible. While over-the-counter remedies are available, they typically take a long time to work and are sometimes totally ineffective or leave unsightly scarring. You should never try to cut off a wart as it can expose your body to infection, excessive, bleeding, and scarring.
